Don’t Underestimate the Oakland Raiders

From 2003 to 2008, the Oakland Raiders have a record of 24-72, and they have perfected the art of the 4-12 season. The Raiders have been going nowhere fast and the 09′ season doesn’t seem to be any different.

Various experiments, like the Randy Moss, Lamont Jordan, and Daunte Culpepper experiments, have been failures. While there’s been a strong pass defense in Oakland over the past few seasons, that’s been nearly it, as the team has a very hard time scoring.

Their secondary has been one of the top in the game, but that hasn’t been enough. With a horrible offense, the secondary won’t be able to do it alone.

With some first round draft picks over the past few years, some new hope may be coming to fruition in Oakland. Standout draft picks Darren McFadden and JaMarcus Russell have both shown signs of improvement in the 2009 season, especially in Russell’s case.

While Russell hasn’t been as good as they’d like him to be, he’s undoubtedly better this year than last, and he’s making less mistakes than he did in 2008.

With a near victory over the Chargers in week 1, Raiders fans had something to cheer for, for the first time in years. The team then traveled to Kansas City in week 2 to face the Chiefs.

It’s no secret that the Chiefs aren’t seen as one of the better teams in the NFL, but they were still favored to defeat the Raiders in this game. The Raiders, however, played some efficient football (especially defensively against new Kansas City quarterback Matt Cassel), and ended up with a–10 win.

I don’t know the last time the Raiders were 1-1 to start the season, but there have probably been more 0-2 starts than 1-1 starts in recent years. They have to be happy with the outcomes of the first two games.
